10.31.08 ::The students at the Leakie Elementary School in Southwest D.C. held their first mini-walk to support the Coalition as a part of Fannie Mae’s 21th Annual Help the Homeless Walkathon (HtH). Leakie Elementary School’s walk raise $2,000 to support the work of the Coalition. 02.14.08 ::District government officials, D.C. Councilmember Muriel Bowser (Ward 4), the Coalition for the Homeless and the community celebrate the opening of the new home of the La Casa Transitional Rehabilitation Program at 1131 Spring Road, NW. La Casa TRP provides temporary residential services for homeless men to help them to achieve self sufficiency.
Valley Place Family Transitional Apartment Program is a 24-hour transitional housing program for homeless families. Specifically, Valley Place provides 18 fully-equipped apartment units to be used as transitional housing for homeless families with children who have lived in emergency shelter for at least six months, but have experienced difficulty in obtaining permanent living situations due to extenuating circumstances, which preclude them from moving through the continuum of care successfully. This includes large families, and families with extenuating circumstances such as physical or mental health problems. Valley Place is located at 1355 and 1357 Valley Place, SE in Washington, DC.

Services provided include employment (e.g., referrals for job readiness, job training, and employment), substance abuse counseling (e.g., on-site substance education and relapse prevention group, and referrals for detox and substance abuse residential and out-patient treatment), life skills training (e.g., parenting skills, homemaking, budgeting, time management), general social services (e.g., referrals for medical care, mental health treatment, child care and public assistance), and permanent housing placement.
